How to deal with stress in midlife

Image
Stress in Midlife: Responsibility, Work, and the Pressure of Time There is a particular kind of stress that arrives in midlife. Not sudden. Not dramatic.  But constant. A steady weight you carry through your days. When everything depends on you By now, life is no longer theoretical.  You are responsible. For work For finances For others Often more than one generation at once.  And much of it cannot simply be put down. The pressure of time Time begins to feel different. More visible. More limited. Faster. Deadlines matter more. Decisions feel heavier. You start to notice: paths taken paths closed time that cannot be recovered Why it builds Because there is so little space. You move from one task to the next: Solving. Managing. Responding. And somewhere along the way, something fades: y our sense of yourself beyond what you do. What actually helps Midlife stress rarely comes from one thing. It comes from too many things — all at once. Trying ...

How to deal with stress in young adulthood

Stress in Young Love: Relationships, Uncertainty, and Letting Go There is a different kind of stress that comes with love.  Less visible.  Less easy to explain. But often more intense than anything else. When something begins to matter In your early adulthood, relationships are no longer abstract. They are real. Personal. Deeply felt. You are no longer just imagining connection. You are inside it. And with that comes something new: t he possibility of loss. The instability no one prepares you for Love does not arrive as certainty.  It arrives with questions. Do they feel the same? Will this last? Am I enough? And even when things seem good, there is often an ongoing anxiety: t his could change. Why it feels so overwhelming Because love touches something fundamental.  Not just your time or your plans,  but your sense of self. You begin to define yourself through another person: their attention their approval their presence Coming ba...

How to deal with stress in your twenties

Stress in Your 20's: Pressure, Identity, and the Feeling You’re Falling Behind There is a particular kind of stress that belongs to your twenties. It doesn’t always look dramatic from the outside. But inside, it can feel constant. A quiet pressure. A sense that something important is happening. And that you might be getting it wrong. The pressure no one quite explains You are expected to be building a life. Choosing a direction. Becoming someone. And at the same time, you are surrounded by people who seem to already have: clearer plans better opportunities more certainty Whether they actually do is another question. But it feels real. Comparison without end For the first time in history, you are not only living your own life but you are also watching hundreds of others do the same alongside you. Careers. Relationships. Travel. Success. All visible. All curated. All immediate. And so the question quietly forms: Am I behind? A necessary re-think But here is s...

How to be mindful of the present moment

The Strawberry: A Story About Stress, Change and Being Alive There is an old Zen story. A man is being chased by a tiger. He runs and runs until he reaches the edge of a steep cliff. With nowhere else to go, he climbs down, gripping a branch growing out of the rock. Above him, the tiger waits. Hundreds of metres below, he can see the bottom of the valley. As he hangs there, the branch begins to crack. Suddenly, he notices something. A small wild strawberry growing within reach. He picks it. He eats it. And says: how sweet it is.

How to deal with everyday stress

Image
How to deal with everyday stress Stress: our companion to everday life We speak about stress as if it were an inevitable malfunction over which we can have no control. Something has gone wrong, and that triggers us, regardless of whose fault it is. The word stress is relatively new. It comes from engineering and means the pressure placed on a structure. Before that, people spoke of burden, strain, or simply the weight of life . Nothing about the experience is new. Only our expectation is.  We live as if life should feel manageable, smooth, under control.  And when it isn’t, we assume something is wrong. But perhaps nothing is wrong at all. It's all just a normal part of human experience. Why it feels harder nowadays What has changed is not life itself, but its intensity: We are always connected Always informed Always comparing There is no natural pause. And so, instead of meeting stress, we try resist it.  And that is where pressure quietly turns into sufferin...

Ayurvedic Detox Routine: Stage 4 — Stabilise a Healthier Metabolism

Image
How to detox better, simply. Part Four. A simple four-stage detox routine inspired by modern Ayurveda (Part 4) In the previous articles we explored the first three stages of this gentle detox routine. We began by preparing the body and improving digestion. We then looked at how the body begins releasing stored toxins . Finally, we supported the body as it burned and eliminated those toxins . You can read the earlier articles here: Part 1 — Preparing the Body Part 2 — Releasing Stored Toxins Part 3 — Burning and Eliminating Toxins The final stage is perhaps the most important. Detox is not really about a short cleanse. The real goal is to create simple habits that keep the body working well in everyday life. Stage 4: Stabilise a Healthier Metabolism By this stage, digestion is usually stronger and the body feels lighter and more balanced. The focus now shifts from cleansing to maintaining this healthier state . The principles remain simple. Eat simply and regularly Cho...

Ayurvedic Detox Routine: Stage 3 — Burn And Eliminate Toxins

Image
How to detox better, simply. Part Three. A simple four-stage detox routine inspired by modern Ayurveda (Part 3) In the previous article we looked at Stage 2: releasing stored toxins . By this point the body has usually begun to loosen substances that have accumulated over time through stress, diet, alcohol, pollution and the general pace of modern life. Stage 3 focuses on the next step: helping the body process and eliminate these toxins efficiently. Once toxins are mobilised, the body must break them down and move them out through its natural detox systems: the liver, digestive tract, kidneys, skin and lymphatic system. The goal is still not extreme cleansing. It is simply to support the body while it does the work it is designed to do. Stage 3: Burn and Eliminate Toxins During this stage the body’s metabolism and detox pathways become more active. You may notice positive changes such as: lighter digestion improved energy clearer thinking gradual weight loss Many pe...

Ayurvedic Detox Routine: Stage 2 — Releasing stored toxins

Image
How to detox better, simply. Part Two. A simple four-stage detox routine inspired by modern Ayurveda (Part 2) In the first article we looked at Stage 1: preparing the body . The goal was simple: support digestion, circulation and elimination so the body can begin working more efficiently again. After one or two weeks of this gentle preparation, the body is ready for the next step. Stage 2 focuses on helping the body release toxins that have been stored over time while also calming the brain and reducing cravings. When digestion improves and circulation increases, the body naturally begins to loosen and mobilise substances that have accumulated through poor diet, stress, alcohol, pollution or simply years of modern living. The aim is not to force detoxification, but to support the body’s natural processes . Stage 2: Release Stored Toxins During this stage, you continue many of the habits from Stage 1, but a few additional elements are introduced. Two traditional herbal supplements are ...

Ayurvedic Detox Routine: Stage 1 — Preparing the Body Naturally

Image
How to detox better, simply. Part One. A simple four-stage detox routine inspired by modern Ayurveda (Part 1) Every year I like to reset my habits and give my body a chance to recover from modern life: too much sitting, too much stress and sometimes too much food. A few years ago I tried a gentle detox programme described by Dr Kulreet Chaudhary who combines modern medicine with traditional Ayurvedic ideas. Whether the benefits were physical, psychological, or a bit of both, I felt noticeably better: lighter digestion, clearer thinking, weight loss and more energy. So I’ve decided to try it again and share the process here as a four-part series . The programme works in four stages: Prepare the body Release stored toxins Burn and eliminate them Stabilise a healthier metabolism Today we start with Stage 1: preparing the body. Stage 1: Prepare the Body The first step is simple. Before the body can cleanse itself, digestion and circulation need a little support. Thi...

Why we should buy elegant crockery

Image
Eat Beautifully, Live More Slowly A simple way to enjoy food more: thoughtful presentation, colourful crockery and small portions that turn everyday meals into small moments of pleasure. Good food should nourish the body. But it should also delight the senses. We often focus on what we eat — organic vegetables, fresh ingredients, whole foods — and rightly so. But how we present our food can quietly transform the entire experience of eating. A beautiful plate invites us to slow down. When colours, textures and shapes are thoughtfully arranged, the meal stops being something we consume quickly and becomes something we enjoy. Even simple dishes — rice, vegetables, a small stir-fry — can feel generous and abundant when they are served thoughtfully. The pleasure of variety One trick I have come to appreciate is serving food in several small portions rather than one large plate. A bowl of rice. A small pan of vegetables. A small bowl of unpasteurised kimchi. Perhaps another dish with beans...

How to make the best coffee in the world

Image
Brew Better = Live Better Grounds for Happiness. From Bean to Bliss.  As Jesse Adams said,  “Coffee smells like freshly ground heaven.” This is my essential guide to great coffee for kick-starting your day. There are so many so-called expert opinions and conspiracy theories about drinking coffee. Even decaf can apparently be unhealthy for you due to the processes involved in removing the caffeine from the beans. It's easy to get lost in the polemic. My take? Like many things in life. It's good for you in moderation and tastes and smells amazing. Even Ayurveda doesn't object to fresh coffee. Simply. Better. Living. In 2022, I invested in a  DeLonghi La Specialista Maestro  and have never looked back. From espresso to latte macchiato, it never disappoints. This is admittedly the expensive, flagship model, but there are many others from DeLonghi that will keep you more than happy. And when a good cappuccino now costs 5 EUR in a café, you will save money over time. My r...

Why we should buy organic ingredients

Image
Choose organic = Simply Better Living Organic food is not about being perfect. It is about making small, sensible choices that support your health and our miraculous planet. Here are three simple reasons to choose organic when you can . Fewer unwanted chemicals on your plate Organic farming limits the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides. That means less chemical residue on the food you eat every day. No diet is completely pure, of course. But choosing organic is one practical way to reduce your overall exposure without overthinking every meal. Healthy outside starts from the inside. Better for soil, wildlife, and the bigger picture Organic farms work with natural systems rather than against them. They tend to support healthier soils, more biodiversity and more responsible use of the land. You may not see that difference on your plate. But over time, these small choices add up to a quieter, steadier kind of environmental care. Think of it as voting with your shoppi...
