Ayurvedic Detox Routine: Stage 1 — Preparing the Body Naturally
How to detox better, simply. Part One.
A simple four-stage detox routine inspired by modern Ayurveda (Part 1)
Every year I like to reset my habits and give my body a chance to recover from modern life: too much sitting, too much stress and sometimes too much food.
A few years ago I tried a gentle detox programme described by Dr Kulreet Chaudhary who combines modern medicine with traditional Ayurvedic ideas. Whether the benefits were physical, psychological, or a bit of both, I felt noticeably better: lighter digestion, clearer thinking, weight loss and more energy.
So I’ve decided to try it again and share the process here as a four-part series.
The programme works in four stages:
-
Prepare the body
-
Release stored toxins
-
Burn and eliminate them
-
Stabilise a healthier metabolism
Today we start with Stage 1: preparing the body.
Stage 1: Prepare the Body
The first step is simple. Before the body can cleanse itself, digestion and circulation need a little support.
This stage is not about extreme fasting or harsh cleanses. It is about helping the body work better so that natural detoxification can begin.
The routine focuses on three things:
-
improving digestion
-
stimulating circulation and lymph flow
-
supporting regular elimination
Here is the daily routine.
Morning
Start the day with a large glass of warm water with fresh lemon juice. You can also enjoy a glass of my favourite detox juice.
Then drink a cup of a simple herbal detox tea. This traditional blend supports digestion and helps reduce bloating.
Before showering, gently brush the skin with a dry body brush. This stimulates circulation and lymphatic flow. If you have time, after your shower, you can spoil your skin with fractionated coconut oil. With a candle and some quiet spa music, you reach the luxury of a five-star hotel.
During the day
Eat simple, whole foods and avoid heavy processed meals. Kitcheri is an especially good detox meal. Add a little extra fibre such as ground flaxseed to support digestion.
Drink the cumin-coriander-fennel tea during the day if you like.
Evening
Before bed, many people take a mild herbal supplement such as Triphala, which supports regular digestion overnight.
This first stage usually lasts one to two weeks. Its purpose is simple: get the body working smoothly again.
In the next article we will look at Stage 2: how the body begins releasing toxins that have been stored in tissues over time.
Small choices. Better days. Simply better living.
